Are Dishwashers Worth It? Pros and Cons of a Dishwasher.

Dishwashers are a frequent topic of many discussions: on the one hand, dishwashers make our life a lot easier, but on the other hand, they take up a lot of space and can cost a pretty penny. Today I have prepared research on the advantages and disadvantages of a dishwasher.

Feel free to check out the pros and cons of a white kitchen, too.

What Are the Benefits of a Dishwasher?

  • Time-saving. On average, every housewife spends up to an hour a day washing dishes, especially in a large family. And this time can be spent with greater benefit.
  • User-friendly. Simplicity and ease of use will allow even inexperienced users of equipment to quickly become friends with the dishwasher.
  • Water-saving. The main advantage of the dishwasher is the economical consumption of water. Your dishwasher will need only 15 litres of water to wash 14-16 sets of kitchen utensils (which is quite an impressive amount) but when you do the washing by hand, you will waste at least 100 litres of water.
Is it more efficient to use a dishwasher? In one washing session, the machine consumes 10 to 15 litres of water. While you are washing the dishes, at this time the water flows from the tap and in half an hour of washing you can spend from 30 to 60 litres of water without even noticing. The dishwasher draws water several times in small portions — depending on the mode and the dishwasher uses this water to do your dishes without water running from a tap for no reason.
Is it cheaper to wash dishes by hand or use a dishwasher? As you can see now it is much cheaper to wash dishes using a dishwasher since you do not need to waste as much water.
  • Perfect cleaning of dishes and kitchen utensils. Since the machine has several modes and even the soaking mode, it can easily cope even with very dirty dishes, such as pots burned during cooking.
Does the dishwasher really clean? The dishwasher washes off all food and dirt glued to your dishes with strong jets of water so you can be sure that all your plates and glasses will be crystal-clear in just 20-30 minutes.
  • Additional disinfection. Since it is physically impossible for a person to wash dishes in the water at a temperature of 90 or 100 degrees, this can only be done in a dishwasher. And such a temperature treatment will be able to kill all the bacteria. So dishwashers are especially necessary if you have children and you are scared about the quality of tap water you do the dishes with.
  • Safety. Dishwashers have an aqua-stop function which is self-explanatory. If something is wrong in the operation of the dishwashing machine, it has the function of stopping the water supply, which will save you from a flood inside your apartment as well as from flooding your neighbours.
  • No noise. All modern dishwashers are very quiet so that they are barely audible. This is very important for families with children, and just so that you can turn on the car at night or in the morning when everyone is still sleeping. Handwashing, on the other hand, causes a lot of problems with quietness, doesn’t it?
  • Automatic water heating.  A dishwasher automatically heats up the water just like a washing machine which is very convenient during periods when the hot water is turned off. This happens quite often in my city so the dishwasher is here for my rescue.
  • The autonomy of the dishwasher machine. Are you late for a meeting but you need your dishes to be done just before you arrive? Not a problem. You have the ability to configure a delayed start on the machine. This is very convenient when you need to go somewhere or load the car for the night, and by morning the necessary dishes will be clean and shiny.
  • Extending the life span of dishes. Yes, you can easily save money on new dishes with a dishwasher. But how does it work? The problem is that when you do handwashing you use sponges that can often give microdamage to your dishes. Since the dishwasher only uses jets of water, it does not damage the coating of your plates which can be very “sensitive”. So, a dishwasher can easily save your dishes and make them shine just like new. You can be sure that fragile porcelain products will last long even if you wash them every day.
  • Easy to install. Installing a dishwasher is as simple as installing a washing machine. All you need is two outputs, one from the sewer, the other from the water supply. You can always follow the instructions and set up the dishwasher yourself, but if you are inexperienced in this field, it is just better to call the professionals. Moreover, a lot of shops offer free delivery and free dishwasher installing so you do not even need to spend extra money on that.
  • Design. Manufacturers can offer a variety of different dishwashers: colour, style and size. So you will definitely be able to find a perfect dishwasher for your kitchen design.
  • Effectiveness. You don’t need to soak your plates manually if they are very greasy and have dried pieces of food glued to them, the dishwasher can reach even the most inaccessible parts of your dishes. It perfectly does its job without causing problems.
Is it OK to use the dishwasher every day? It is perfectly fine to use the dishwasher every day as it is much more “gentle” to your dishes as dishwashers do not use hard sponges that WILL damage the coating of your plates and glasses in no time if you do the handwashing.
  • Health and beauty. When using a dishwasher you will no longer be in contact with chemical detergents which have a negative effect on your skin and manicure, and also you will not need to breathe in all these chemical detergents.
  • Harmony in your family. You will not need to have fights over and over again as to who will do the dishes today. I think this is the most important advantage, as you get to spend this time together. It takes at least an hour a day to do the dishes even in a small family, so you can definitely spend this hour doing something nicer.

What Are the Disadvantages of Dishwashing Machine?

  • Additional power consumption. Even though a lot of dishwashers are electricity-saving oriented, you must realise that your electricity bills will be higher.
But if you read the third paragraph in the advantages of the dishwashing machine paragraph, you will learn that you will save a decent amount of money on your water bills. So you will end up paying the same amount of money but you will save so much time that you could spend doing the dishes, only now you will just relax and enjoy being with your family.
Is it more efficient to use a dishwasher? It is more efficient to use a dishwasher in terms of water consumption. Since there is a group of dishwashing machines that have a class A rating for energy consumption, such machines have very low energy consumption  — less than 1 kW / h, which makes it a very efficient appliance.
  • Not totally autonomous. You will still need to do some work to get your dishes done. It is necessary to fill the dishwashing machine in order to get started which may be very annoying sometimes.
Not many people like putting two plates in the dishwasher. Most of us will wait for the dishes to pile up. This also can be frustrating for the perfectionists who cannot stand seeing their kitchen dirty.
Sometimes piles of greasy dishes can “invite” cockroaches and other bugs to your house, so you need to be extra careful with that.
  • The size. Unfortunately, dishwashers take up a lot of space just like washing machines. If you live in a studio apartment where every meter counts, it will be hard for you to find a place where you will be able to install the dishwasher.
However, there are dishwashers that are relatively small compared to other models. They can fit in your tiny kitchen, but their efficiency leaves much to be desired.  But if you live alone in a small apartment, you do not really need huge powerful dishwashers, so this will be a perfect choice for you.
  • Additional expenses. Dishwashers require some expenses. First of all, it is dishwasher tablets which are quite expensive and they do not last very long.
Now the market offers a variety of dishwasher “accessories” starting from the water softener and finishing with the rinse aid.
Do you need all of these dishwasher accessories? Not really, it is nothing new that the modern world makes us want to spend more. In my opinion, all of these things are not necessary unless your water quality is very poor.
Water quality varies from a city to a city, for example, it is perfectly fine to drink tap water in Europe, so if you can drink this water, you can definitely use if for doing the dishes without buying unnecessary accessories.
Dishwasher tablets are, on the other hand, essential, so try to use the best ones for their price to expand the life span of your dishwasher.
  • The price. On average, a dishwasher costs between $ 400 and $ 1,000. You definitely cannot call this purchase “spontaneous” and you will probably need to plan your budget in advance in order to buy such an expensive thing. But you can dedicate the time you will save on washing the dishes on something more useful which is more important, in my opinion.
Moreover, a lot of shops offer discounts and monthly payments.
  • Filter washing. Every dishwasher has installed filters which need to be washed and changed from time to time, which can be time-consuming and annoying.
  • Dishwashers have some requirements for the place where you put them. You need to connect it to the water supply and sewage system. It is advisable to have an extra outlet so that the dishwasher would not give the load to electrical wiring.
  • Loading dishwasher. In order to turn on the dishwashing machine, you must load it at least halfway. If you still load only a few plates, it will soon break. In addition, this will lead to a considerable waste of water.
  • Not all dishes can be washed in the dishwasher. This applies to aluminium objects (coating of the bottom of pots), wooden utensils, items made of silver, tin and brass. If you are planning to use baking soda based detergents, your dishes can fade away with time.

Do I Really Need a Dishwasher?

The advantages of a dishwasher machine definitely outweigh its disadvantages. It saves your time and water bills, it does not make much noise and expands a life span of your dishes.

However, dishwashers have some disadvantages such as price, additional expenses on dishwasher detergent and water softener.

You do not really need a dishwasher if you live alone and prefer to eat out, but you do need a dishwasher if you have a big family and you want to avoid all the fights as to who will do the dishes after lunch.

Is It Cheaper To Use a Dishwasher at Night?

It is cheaper to use a dishwasher at night but only if you have a two-tariff electricity meter that keeps track of the day and night electricity using. If you want the machine to use less energy to make your bills less expensive, carry out a delayed start at night as the tariff per kilowatt for electricity is less at night than during the day.

But it is still better to buy a class A + dishwasher (A ++, A +++) that consumes less than 1 kW per hour to reduce electricity consumption.

Dishwasher vs Hand Washing: Which Is Better?

How Many Years Does a Dishwasher Last?

The lifespan of the dishwasher depends on the manufacturer and may vary from 3 to 20 years or more. You should buy only well-established dishwasher brands like Bosch, Electrolux and Frigidaire.

Since the durability of a dishwasher is determined by the quality of care for the dishwasher and the implementation of key operating principles, manufacturers do not guarantee exactly how many years dishwashers will last. However, companies such as Electrolux, Beko, Bosch provide users with the most expensive equipment in the household appliance market, the duration of which is at least 20 years.

Moreover, they offer a warranty from 1 year for economy-class brands and up to 2-3 years for luxury items.

However, there are some steps you must follow if you want your dishwasher to last long:

  • Get rid of the leftover food. If there is leftover food on the dishes, the drain of the device may become clogged. A sticky and dried food may not be washed at all after one wash cycle. If there are burnt pieces of food, then you should presoak such dishes in warm water. I know, it may sound annoying but it is not as bad as you think, it will take you just 10 minutes, but you will be able to extend the lifespan of your dishwasher.
  • Use only detergents for a dishwasher. Do not try to use the detergent you use for handwashing as it may lead to damaging your dishwasher.
  • Do not overload your dishwasher. Do not put more dishes than your dishwasher can handle. Every dishwasher has certain recommendations that must be strictly followed. If you put more plates and glasses, it will lead to dishwasher breaking. Even weight distribution is the key.
  • Use proper programmes. Some users try to turn on different ones each time forgetting about the basic washing mode. Read the dishwasher manual carefully before choosing the wash cycle for your dishes.
  • Use the drying mode. By drying the washed dishes the dishwasher machine dries itself. Therefore, the likelihood of rust, scale, corrosion of the elements during the interaction of metal structures with water is reduced.
  • Leave the door open. A lot of people, especially owners of built-in dishwashers keep the door closed at all times so that the machines cannot be seen. This is a big mistake because it will cause fungi, mould and bacteria. Of course, you can wipe the dishwasher machine after each wash cycle, but it is just a lot easier to keep the door half-open at least for an hour after the wash cycle.
  • Rinse removable plastic parts in clean water. It may seem that they are already clean after each dishwashing, but they are not. Once a month take the time for the dishwasher: take out the baskets, place them in a basin and rinse them with warm water.
